Here at AUMC, we are an inviting christian family that nurtures relationships with God, one another, and the community,

Avondale Staff

  • Senior Pastor

    Dr. Choongho Kwon

"I look for inspiration through my meditation, prayer, questions, study, experiences, relationship and conversation with others. Interpreting the life of our community is as important as reading the biblical text. Our neighborhood is a multicultural, multi-religious community. I believe God calls our church to the ministry of love and reconciliation with those who are different from our congregation. We are all lambs of God."

  • Secretary

    Sandy Smith

"I started at Avondale UMC in 1998 so my 20th anniversary is coming up. I had been working for a local family-owned newspaper, it was sold, and most of the employees, including me, lost their jobs. I wasn't quite ready to retire, so I was looking for something to do for just a few more years... The people make Avondale UMC so special to me. They are loving, kind, generous, and dedicated Christians. I've seen people in this church rally together many times to help those in need, in so many different ways."

  • Program Director /
    Bell Choir Director

    Mark Keeney

"I started coming to Avondale in 1988 with my family. I started singing in the choir and joined the bell choir. In 1991 I put together a bell quartet and was asked to continue directing the quartet on staff. Later when the bell director left I began directing the Bell Choir. I started as Program Director in 2004, as another way to serve the members of Avondale Church. I find enjoyment  interacting with the wonderful members of Avondale UMC."

  • Director of Congregational Care Ministy

    Judy Everley

"As the Director of Congregational Care Ministry, it is my responsibility to establish, organize, educate, and communicate with the care team to visit shut-ins, nursing homes, assisted living members, and any member of AUMC as needed. It is my responsibility to lead a Connectional Ministry Team to provide support and connection to our members, visitors, and new members.  Also, I support and assist the senior pastor, make hospital calls, and support familiar during illnesses, life transitions, death, weddings, and the birth of babies. I publish the Community of Caring message on email each Friday. As the CCM Director, I organize small groups such as Meet and Greeter, Welcoming, Renewed Hope, and future small groups as need arises. My goal is to show God's love to others, provide comfort and support, deepen our faith in God, and bring a smile or laugh to those in need. "

  • Youth Director

    Taylor Tracy

"The spiritual formation of young people is absolutely essential for the future of the church.  Our youth are the future pastors, choir directors, altar guild members, and trustees of our communities.  This places a great deal of importance on student ministries, which are charged with providing quality growth rooted in both excitement of ministry in action and genuine closeness with God."

  • Choir Director

    Taylor Tracy

"My goal with the Avondale Cathedral Choir is to continue the tradition of excellence and maintain the level of quality that has been a part of this congregation for over 60 years.  We will do this by continuing to emphasize quality liturgy, collaborating with guest musicians and reaching out to the community by offering community concerts in concert with other congregations."

  • Organist

    John Livingston

"My favorite part of being a pianist is being able to share a wide range of great music, some familiar and some not so familiar to people. Music has always been extremely powerful and I enjoy being a part of great worship at this church."

  • Nursery Attendant

    Rachel Phelps

"As an educator, I love working Monday - Friday with my 5th grade students. However, I wanted to be able to work with younger children and babies. After finding Avondale, it feels more like home than work; I'm surrounded by friends who feel more like family."

  • Nursery Attendant

    Kathryn Boman

"The children often enjoy reading, playing on the sensory table, pretending in the kitchen area, playing with baby dolls, and age-appropriate art activities. As staff, we help the children develop skills such as leading prayer before snack, manners, and appropriate behavior in the Sanctuary. Each child chooses their own job each week. Some favorite jobs include "snack helper" and "line leader". We strive to create a safe and fun environment that is child-centered and child-led."

  • Nursery Attendant

    Carrie Cerra

"I’m certified as an art teacher and thought that would be great when coming up with activities for the kids. I was happy to apply (for the position) and look forward to coming up with projects for the nursery. Working in the nursery is awesome because it doesn’t feel like work. The kids are excited to come in and play, and getting to be a part of creating that fun is so rewarding."
